The Foreign Ministry applauded the emergence of Tijjani Muhammad – Bande as the president of the UN General Assembly’s 74th session.
The acting spokesperson for the ministry, Friday Akpan, said in a declaration in Abuja that the election is a favorable growth and shows the trust in the capacity of Nigeria to pilot the affairs of the renowned global institution.
The sole applicant for the position, Mr Muhammad-Bande, was appointed by acclamation at the Assembly’s 87th plenary session in New York.
“Prof. Muhammad-Bande is the second Nigerian to hold the position.
“Maj.- Gen. Joseph Garba (Rtd) was president of the 44th session of the General Assembly of the United Nations from 1989 to 1990,” he said.
In September, Mr Muhammad-Bande will take over officially from the current president, María Garcés.
